ARTIST STATEMENT
Rick lives and paints abstract watercolors in
the town of Bethel, Maine. Born and raised in Connecticut. Rick moved to Maine
in 1984 to pursue a commercial flying career with Bar Harbor Airlines. His
aviation career concluded after 20 fun filled years. Ten working for various
commuter airlines, then10 years with Continental Airlines. Retirement created
time, space, and opportunity for positive change in his artwork and a
subsequent art career that truly is his passion in life.
“My
work is an ongoing exploration in expanding techniques of application and
process. A relaxed attitude toward the materials and application process lends
itself to the current concept of going to paper with no intention or
expectation. This approach frees the work of commonly practiced rules and
restrictions, allowing paper and pigment to explore options on their own. My
working influence is freely improvisational and responds to the emerging piece
at hand.”
Art
education for Rick started at The Williston Northampton School. He graduated
from Hartwick College with a B.A. Concentrations in two and three dimensional
design, hand blown glass, cast bronze, wood, ceramic, and multimedia sculpture.
Painting, specifically watercolors, was not in his repertoire until he found
that his paper, pigments and pens could fit and travel easily in his flight bag.
Current work is a direct result of many hours working wet and penning dry, in
cruise flight and during layovers. The much larger work today is more
comfortably created in his studio in Maine where his artistic talent wouldn’t
only look great on your wall but could be a great design for your skis, snow
board, wind surfer, surf board. Visit
